A Pass Plus certificate is given to young drivers after they have undergone an advanced driving course that includes motorway and nighttime driving. This certificate will certify that the young driver has had experience driving in a number of conditions. This course enables the young driver to have hands on experience on how to maneuver in areas that are not smooth, during nighttime, and during harsh weather conditions. The main advantage of having a Pass Plus certificate is that your premium rates will be lowered by 35%. This course offers six hours of extra driving. It may seem like a waste of time to many young drivers but this certificate alone will be the ticket to lower premium rates.
It was noted that several young drivers despite physically knowing how to drive and passing their driving tests, had very little experience in driving. This was put across by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), therefore young drivers are high-risk individuals when on the road, many insurance companies are aware of that fact, and that is why they formulated temporary car insurance for young drivers. Nigel Harries, Deputy Head of the DSA examiner mentioned that several municipalities did recognize the Pass Plus certificate and they supported the giving of discounts if a young driver has this certificate.
This scheme is available to new qualified drivers and can be taken within 12 months of receiving a driver’s license. Your driving instructor may decided to continue to help you with your driving lessons for the 12 months, if not so then the individual can apply in any of the many driving schools available. The Pass Plus scheme charges per hour of the normal driving lesson. It does not cost much compared to the amount you would have to pay on your premiums if you did not have the certificate. Furthermore this extra driving lesson instills confidence in the young driver and provides more awareness on how easily accidents can happen and how to avoid them.
